HUBLI: How does one tap talent in rural areas and at the same time popularize a community radio? The University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad, has hit upon a novel idea to do both: to broadcast the talent hunt show for students on its community radio and thereby popularizing the radio.
The Krishi community radio is used to educate the farmers, school dropouts and Self-Help Groups (SHG) on agriculture- and health-related issues.
But now it will focus on talent show too.
Speaking to TOI, S Devendrappa, programme officer of the radio, said: "The new programme, 'Talent Hunt', will give information about the talents of students in the age group of 7-15 in various schools. The programme, which will start in the first week of February, will be of about 10-15 minutes duration in the evening once a week."
He added: "We will visit around 30-40 schools in the neighbouring villages of Dharwad district in the first phase and identify the talent of the students. We will choose students with unique talent and interview them. These interviews will be broadcast on our community radio. This initiative will help us to increase the number of listeners and it will also provide a platform for the students to exhibit their talents as well."
Veeresh Baddi and Siddesh, studying in class 5, said: "We usually give programmes in Akashwani in Dharwad. We are happy that Krishi community radio will showcase students' talents.'' Krishi community radio, run on the frequency of 90.4 MHz, started in the campus of UAS in 2007 for the benefit of farmers. The radio covers a range of about 15-20 km surroundings of Dharwad .
